The importance of a restful sleep
We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping, during which time the body temperature drops and the energy expenditure decreases. Having a restful sleep is necessary, it allows to be effective and in a good mood throughout the day. But more and more people have a disturbed sleep, and we can consider now that one in three is prone to sleep disorders (source: ANSES).
Sleep is a state that allows the body to restore itself. But it is not because we close our eyes that the body stops. On the contrary, it is far from being inactive. First of all, the growth hormone secretion is more important at night, it is a hormone that helps the nerve recovery as well as the development of the skeleton and the tissues but also the use of the fats stored in them. During the night, adipose tissue is use to produce energy. In fact, because we do not bring energy via food at night, the body uses reserves and thus participates in the phenomenon of greasy destocking. Sleep is also the moment when the brain will encode and memorize the sensory information perceived during the day.

Indeed, with the phenomenon of mastication the active will be absorbed by the sublingual route, directly in the blood vessels present under the tongue. It is a shortcut compared to an oral intake and the effect is of which faster felt.
Melatonin, a sleep hormone
Have you ever wondered why we sleep at night and not during the day time? The answer lies in a small part of your brain, and more precisely in the epiphysis.
Melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone, is a hormone naturally produced by the epiphysis and plays an important role in the sleep cycle. The secretion increases in case of darkness, and especially at nightfall to facilitate falling asleep. Thus, melatonin secretion can be increased tenfold when darkness is installed.
If melatonin is naturally produced by the body, the secretion may be disturbed in some cases. This is particularly the case during prolonged exposure to intense light, such as when we watch a screen too bright at night or during repetitive trips between different time zones.
Also, this secretion naturally decreases with age: the epiphysis will secrete less and less melatonin over time. This explains that the phenomena of sleep disorders is more present between elderly people.
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is an essential vitamin in the body because we cannot synthetize it by ourselves. Like most B vitamins, it is involved in the energy process and plays a key role in the metabolism of amino acids and proteins.
More particularly in the brain, vitamin B6 participates in the formation of certain neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. This is how she plays a role in psychic balance.
Having a good psychic balance is directly related to better sleep.
Understanding the sleep cycle
Our sleep rhythms are regulated by the hypothalamus located in the brain. It's a real clock, and that explains why we fall asleep and get up at similar hours every day.
Understanding how our sleep is decompensated and the importance of each phase allows us to understand the importance of this phenomenon which occupies us nearly a third of our life.
Our sleep is broken down into 4 phases (source: CENAS)
The first phase is falling asleep, a cycle that will represent between 5 and 10% of our total sleep, where the body will make the transition between the waking state and the state of sleep. Here, the muscles relax gradually. You have already felt like falling into the void? During this cycle the muscles relax and this phenomenon is frequent.
The second and third phase are the slow sleep, where, as the name implies, brain activity is reduced to the maximum to put the body at rest. During this phase the brain emits slow waves and this is the moment when we recover the most.
The last cycle is paradoxical sleep, during which we make the most elaborate dreams. The brain activity here is very intense and the eyes present rapid and incessant movements.
The secretion of melatonin is correlated to the different cycles and allows to rebalance them in case of malfunction.
