What produces melanin?

Melanin is a natural skin pigment. The level of melanin in the skin determines its color. This pigment is derived from tyrosine, an amino acid produced by melanocytes. Located deep within the epidermis, melanocytes supply melanin to the cells that make up the outer layer of the skin.

What is the role of melanin?

The primary role of melanin is to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. Melanin in the skin helps protect it from premature aging of cells that cause the early appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging.

There are three types of UV rays: UV-A and UV-B, as well as UV-C, which are completely blocked by the ozone layer. Excessive exposure to UVA rays alters the structure of collagen and elastin, causing accelerated skin aging and the appearance of wrinkles. UVB rays do not penetrate beyond the surface layers of the skin. They are responsible for sunburn in cases of excessive exposure, but also stimulate the production of melanin.

How to increase skin melanin?

Tanning is primarily caused by the increased production of melanin during sun exposure. For a more enhanced tan, or to prepare for sun exposure, it is possible to supplement with melanin through dietary supplements. Melanin in the form of a dietary supplement helps prepare for sun exposure and helps preserve the skin's youthful appearance.

Biocyte offers a range of melanin-based food supplements for people who want to prepare their skin and enhance their tan before and during sun exposure. Terracotta Tanning from Biocyte is the first sun-protective food supplement made with melanin extracted from olives. Composed of melanin, tyrosine, and copper, this food supplement contributes to normal skin pigmentation and helps protect cells against oxidative stress thanks to copper.

Based on melanin extracted from olives and Glycoserum EF® complex, two nutricosmetic active ingredients innovative, also discover Biocyte Terracotta Intense Tanning. This food supplement of melanin from black olives helps prepare the skin for sun exposure while protecting it from the premature appearance of the first signs of aging. This melanin in capsules is combined with Glycoserum EF®, which is made up of glycolipids, phospholipids and ceramides extracted from wheat seeds. These three components help nourish the skin's hydrolipidic film and therefore preserve its barrier function.

How to use a melanin food supplement?

Melanin supplements are generally used 1 month before, during, and after sun exposure. It helps protect the skin, but it doesn't replace proper sunscreen. Indeed, applying sunscreen remains essential to protect your skin, regardless of its type.
